Skyline Living Welcomes New Tenants from Ukraine
Following the devastating invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Skyline Living is welcoming Ukrainian refugees to many of its apartment communities.
More than four million displaced Ukrainians have fled the conflict as of March 31, 2022, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency. Half of those displaced are children. The Government of Canada created an accelerated pathway for temporary residence for those fleeing the war, and nearly 60,000 Ukrainians have applied to this program so far. Another 12,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Canada since January.
“As we saw this happening, we knew we had the ability to do something tangible and meaningful,” said BJ Santavy, Vice President, Skyline Living. “As a provider of rental apartments, we were in a position to provide immediate help to those needing housing.”
Currently, six Ukrainian refugee families have moved, or will soon move, into Skyline Living apartments in Alberta. That number will likely expand across Canada as refugees continue to arrive, and as more suites become available. We have reviewed and improved our Skyline Living Refugee Assistance program to ensure it meets current and future needs. We are also working with local agencies to aid in job placement. Further, to help these families resettle with as few barriers as possible, we have waived several requirements and fees normally expected on move-in.
“As the families settle in, we will help support them by directing them to community resources as well as our R.I.S.E. program, which offers aid to tenants in crisis,” said Santavy. “The circumstances that brought our newest neighbours here are heartbreaking and we grieve their losses as Ukraine bravely holds on. We hope for better days ahead.”
