What to Look for in a Team Sport

Getting involved in a team sport is a great way to exercise, enjoy the weather, and meet new people. Finding the right one will make sure you and/or your kids have fun! If you’re interested in sports, these are some things to keep in mind:

  1. What’s your sport? Figure out what interests you. Try a few drop-in or recreational sports to see what you like before signing up for a whole season.
  2. What’s your budget? Consider uniforms, equipment costs, registration fees, transportation, and insurance.

    TIP:
Many organizations, such as Canadian Tire’s JumpStart and KidSport Ontario, offer funding to offset the costs of kids’ sports. Some local businesses and community organizations also sponsor teams – it never hurts to ask!

  3. What’s your skill level? If you have no experience, look for the words “fun,” “no skill required,” “open,” etc. Kids are usually signed up based on age. Meet with the league organizers or coach and ask what the skill expectations are. Make sure you’re comfortable with how competitive the other players are.
  4. What’s your commitment? Consider what level of commitment you can make. If you can’t be on a team that needs you every week, look for a drop-in league.
